  • Remove a cat from a basket using protective equipment where appropriate

    Ensure room is secure by closing doors and windows.
    Pull out the pin of the basket.
    open the lid slightly and introduce yourself to the cat, by stroking and talking to it.
    Keeping a hand on the cat, open the lid fully and reach in to hold the cat around its chest/shoulders, and lift the cat out of the basket.
    Place the cat gently on the table, and keep a hand on it whilst you shut the lid of the basket.
  • Place a cat on the table

    Gently place cat on the table.
    Keep one hand on it whilst you close the lid of the basket.
  • Identify sites for subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous injection

    Subcutaneous
    • Scruff of the neck
    Intramuscular
    • Lumbar epaxial muscles
    • Quadriceps
    Intravenous
    • Cephalic vein
    • Saphenous vein
  • Restrain a cat for jugular venipuncture (for blood sampling) in the upright position, and hold this position for approximately 10 seconds
    Position the cat near the edge of the table in sitting or sternal recumbency. Its head should face towards the person taking the sample.
    Hold the cat’s head upwards by placing two fingers under its chin.
    Use the other hand to make a ’W’ with your fingers, in order to hold the forelimbs together.
    Hold position for 10 seconds.
  • Restrain a cat for cephalic venipuncture and raise the vein (in readiness for an intravenous injection) 

    Position the cat so its head is facing the person taking the blood sample, with the side of its body up against yourself.
    Restrain the cat’s head by placing a few fingers under its head/neck.
    Gently holding the cat against your body, hold the cat’s forelimb and extend it forward a little.
    Use your thumb to raise the vein, placing thumb on the dorsal aspect of the forelimb at the elbow.
    Slightly rotate your thumb laterally, to bring the vein to an optimum position.
  • Return a cat to a basket and secure the basket

    Open the basket fully, ready to return the cat.
    Slowly pick up the cat around its chest and shoulders and carefully place it into the basket.
    Keeping your hand on the cat’s back, close the cage over your arm, fully shutting it once your arm is out.
    To fully close the door, push the pin through both hoops.
  • Clean the table after use using the materials provided
    Thoroughly wipe down table using provided materials.
    Use enough, but not too much product.
