A moment when a character realizes a crucial truth about themselves, others, or their situation
Tragic Downfall
The process by which a character's flaws or actions lead to their own demise or tragic consequences
Guilt
A feeling of responsibility for a wrong committed or a fault or offense against some moral principle or standard
Irony
A literary or rhetorical device in which there is a discrepancy or incongruity between what is expected and what actually happens
Paranoia
A mental state marked by irrational suspicion and fear, often accompanied by obsessive behavior and a heightened sense of alertness
peripetia
a sudden change in the story which is a negative circumstance, when a character isnt aware of their downfall
e.g. when macbeth commits regicide as he may not recognise it yet, but that point marks his downfall as everything spiralled out of control from that moment forth
catharsis
a release of emotions through pity and fear
e.g. audience experiences catharsis towards macbeth as they fear his blood-thirsty rampage, whilst also pitying him for indulging in his ambition: hes a victim of his own ambition.
