• 1. Directory passes a new electoral law in January 1798
• 2. Electoral law was to minimise royalist gains in March elections.
• 3. Directors were scared as Jacobins were gaining support.
• Law of 22 Floréal (11th May) purged 127 deputies from 500 council.
• The purpose of purging 127 deputies from the council was to consolidate power and eliminate political opposition.
• 4. Reinforced difficulty of following the 1795 constitution.
