Multi-Store Model

Cards (8)

  • If you pay attention to something, it moves from the sensory register to the STM
  • Sensory register = the place where information is held at each of the senses
  • STM has a limited (18s) duration and so memories will decay relatively quickly if they aren’t rehearsed
    • information will also get displaced from the STM when new information comes in
  • Maintenance rehearsal will lead to memory’s moving from the STM to the LTM
    • To get them back from the LTM, retrieval must be used
  • Proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin
  • PEEL 1:
  • PEEL 1:
Weakness - MSM is too simple - suggests that STM and LTM are single unitary stores - disproved by other research
  • PEEL 2:
Strength - Supporting Evidence - Controlled lab studies on C, C and D support the existence of STM and LTm
