  • Reproductive Health
    • “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive health system and to its functions and processes.” (World Health Organization)
  • Reproductive health in physical, mental, and social aspects
  • RH implies that:
    SOCIAL: People are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life.
    PHYSICAL: They have the capability to reproduce.
    MENTAL: They have the freedom to decide, if, when, and how often to do so.
    ○ The freedom to have a child and the ability to have a healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, and healthy baby.
  • Social
    Safe and satisfying sex
    Freedom to decide when and how often to do so (sex)
    ❖ Choice of when to get pregnant and spacing of pregnancies
  • Mental
    ❖ Affects one’s state of mind
    ❖ Women’s hormones affect their mood and emotions
    Pregnancy affects the mental health of women
    Sexual Identity → Sex, intimacy, reproduction
    ❖ For some, sex is sacred (post-marriage)
  • Physical
    ❖ Shows if parts are functioning well or if there are presence of infections
    ❖ Reproductive Tract Infections INCLUDE:
    1. Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections
    2. Non-sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections
    Contagious infections (virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite) that pass from one person to another via vaginal, oral, or anal sex.
    ● Ex: Gonorrhea, HIV, Chlamydia
  • Non-sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections
    Non-contagious infections (virus, bacteria, fungus or parasite) that are not sexually transmitted.
    ● Ex: Urinary Tract Infection, Cervicitis, Vaginitis, Other Inflammatory infections
  • Remain the leading cause of ill health and death for women of childbearing age worldwide. Problems include:
    Unintended pregnancies
    Maternal death and disability
    Sexually transmitted infections
    Gender based violence
    ○ Other problems related to their reproductive system and sexual behavior
