L5.2.4.2.1.2: Intrauterine Devices (IUD)

Cards (12)

  • Intrauterine Devices (IUD)
Small flexible devices made of metal and/or plastic or silastic (combination of silicone and plastic) inserted inside the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy.
  • MECHANISM OF ACTION
    ● Prevents fertilization
    ● Inhibits sperm migration in the upper female genital tract
    ● Inhibits ovum transport and fertilization
  • Non-Medicated IUD
Does NOT provide any pharmacologic intervention (no medications)
  • Non-Medicated IUD
    Example:
Lippes loop is a plastic double “S” loop IUD closely fitting the contours (shape of outer surface) of the uterine cavity that reduces the incidence of expulsion. (Not used anymore as it can be easily displaced)
  • Medicated IUDs
Provides pharmacologic intervention (with medications or hormones)
    ● Also provides a T-Shape that can block sperm from entering the fallopian tube
  • Medicated IUDs
    Examples:
Copper T380-A is an IUD that uses copper as a spermicide (kills sperm)
LNG20 uses the hormone levonorgestrel that works in preventing the release of an egg from the ovary or preventing fertilization of the egg by sperm (male reproductive cells). It also may work by changing the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent development of a pregnancy.
  • When to Insert the IUD
The IUD (especially the copper T380-A) may be inserted any time in the cycle provided:
    ● There are no contraindications,
    ● Preferably during menstruation when the cervix is open until 12 days after the start of their monthly bleeding
  • Who Inserts the IUD

    Public Health Nurse (PHN)
    Trained Midwife
