Cards (4)

  • Specific Heat Capacity
    1. Measure the mass of the metal block using a balance
    2. Insert the immersion heater and thermometer into the block's pre drilled holes
    3. Record the initial temperature of the block
    4. Insulate the block with material to minimise heat loss
    5. Set up the circuit with the heater, power supply and ammeter
    6. Turn on the power supply and heat the block for a set time (e.g. 5 minutes)
    7. After turning off the heater, record the highest temperature reached
    8. Calculate the specific heat capacity using the equation
  • Resistance
    1. Set up a circuit with a power supply, ammeter, volume and a resistance wire
    2. Measure the voltage across the wire and the current through it
    3. Adjust the length of the wire (e.g. 10cm, 20cm, 30cm) and repeat the measurements
    4. Use the formula R=V/I to calculate resistance for each wire length
  • IV Characteristics
    1. Set up a circuit with the component (resistor ,bulb, or diode), variable resistor, ammeter and voltmeter
    2. Adjust the variable resistor to change the voltage across the component
    3. Measure the current for each voltage using the ammeter
    4. Record the voltage for each current using the voltmeter
    5. Plot a graph of current vs voltage to observe the relationship for each componement
  • Density
    1. Measure the mass of the regular solid using a balance
    2. Calculate the volume of the regular solid by measuring its dimensions
    3. Find the density of the regular solid using mass divided by volume
    4. Measure the mass of the irregular solid, then use a displacement can to determine its volume
    5. For a liquid, measure the mass of an empty beaker, add the liquid, subtract the beaker's mass, measure the liquid's volume and calculate density
