Questionnaire

  • Questionnaires are a pre-set list of written questions to which the participant responds. A questionnaire may be used as part of an experiment to assess the dependent variable.
  • Open question
➢ An open question doesn't have a fixed range of answers and respondents are free to answer any way they wish. Questions that ask 'why' are often open questions. Open questions tend to produce qualitative data which is rich in depth and detail but tends to be difficult and time consuming to analyse.
  • Closed question
➢ A closed question offers a fixed number of responses; this could be a ratings scale or a simple yes or no tick box. Closed questions produce numerical data by limiting the answers respondents can give. This makes the data easy to analyse but it may lack the depth and detail associated with qualitative data.
