  • in the beginning, all was in chaos, the world has no shape and form, until an air or mass came out of nowhere. this was called the high plane of heaven
  • there were 3 main gods in the high plane of heaven:
    • ameno minaka nushi no mikoto
    • takami musubi no mikoto
    • kammi musubi no mikoto
  • the japanese and english names of the three gods:
    • ameno minaka nushi no mikoto
    - the deity of the august center of heaven
    • takami musubi no mikoto
    - the high august producing wondrous deity
    • kammi musubi no mikoto
    - the divine producing wondrous deity
  • they are the youngest and main gods that are siblings originally but became husband and wife. they were tasked to form earth and was given a sphere to do so

  • the first island of izanagi and izanami was the onokoro, wherein they eventually got married in
  • izanagi and izanami had 8 kids that became the islands of japan:
    • awaji
    • shikoku
    • oki
    • kyushu

  • when the god of fire was birthed, it weakened izanami. izanagi cried and birthed more gods
  • she is the red sun and the sun goddess. shes the most popular and is the ancestress of the imperial family. she is the chief deity. she emerged when izanagi washed his left eye. she once became very angry with her brother that she hid in a cave and the gods had to dance and hang jewels on the tree of heaven to coax her out. those jewels eventually became stars and planets

  • he is the god of the sea and storm and emerged when izanagi washed his nose

  • it was believed that the emperor was a descendant of amaterasu. this belief stopped after ww2
  • this is a spirit that is everywhere and everything. it is not a god and all humans are the children of it
