Soft engineering

• soft engineering is a less intrusive, more environmentally friendly method of coastal management
• beach nourishment is the replacement of lost beach material. Less energy is transferred to the back of the beach, and is instead lost as the waves hit the beach rather than the cliff face
• cliff regrading is where the angle of the cliff is decreased by planting trees and grasses to anchor the soil and stop the cliff from sliding downhill due to slumping
• sand dune regeneration is the artificial creation of new sand dunes or the restoration of existing dunes to keep the physical barrier between the sea and the land
• managed retreat is when all coastal management is retreated: people are moved out, buildings are destroyed and existing sea defences are removed
