  • What is a stent?
A metal wire mesh that covers the lining inside the vessel and then a balloon is inflated to widen it and then deflated leaving the stent to allow blood to flow through.
  • What is a statin?
Medication that is prescribed to anyone who is at risk of cardiovascular disease and which lowers the cholesterol levels and therefore decreases the rate of fatty deposits that store inside the colonary artery.
  • Name each part:
    4) Aorta
    5) Left Pulmonary Arteries
    6) Left pulmonary veins
    7) Left atrium
    10) Left Ventricle
    11) Septum
    13) Right ventricle
    16) Right atrium
    17) Right pulmonary veins
    18) Right pulmonary arteries
    19) Vena cava
  • Advantages of mechanical valves?
Lasts for a very long time.
  • Disadvantages of mechanical valves?
Must take medication for the rest of their life.
  • Advantages of biological valves?
They work really well and don't need any medication.
  • Disadvantages of biological valves?
    Only last for 12-15 years.
  • Disadvantage of pacemakers?
    Needs regular check-ups
  • Structure of a vein?

Valves - to prevent the backflow of blood
Large lumen - to reduce resistance of blood travelling at a low pressure
Thinner muscle fibre - as it's not needed at a low pressure
  • Structure of an artery?
Small lumen - to keep the blood at a high pressure
Thick elastic tissue - to allow vessel to stretch and return back to shape.
Muscle fibre - to keep the blood at a high pressure
