  • Independent variables are variables changed by the researcher
  • Dependent variables are variables measured by the researcher
  • Situational variables are related to the environment e.g. time of day
  • Participant variables are related to the participants e.g. intelligence, age, gender
  • Extraneous variables are any variables that can affect the relationship between IV and DV and are independent of the IV
  • Confounding variables are variables that vary with the IV and cannot be controlled
