Biological Membranes

Cards (8)

  • What are the roles of Membranes?
    > They are a semi-permeable barrier
    • They keep large and charged molecules out
    • They allow O2 and CO2 in
    > Cell Recognition
    • Recognizes cells as 'self' with antigens
    > Site of chemical reactions
    > Cell signaling
    > They are in charge of compartmentalization
  • What is the fluid mosaic model?
The fluid mosaic model is a concept that describes the structure of the cell membrane as a fluid-like mosaic of various molecules, including phospholipids, proteins, and carbohydrates.
  • What is a Channel?
The first of two Integral proteins.
    > Span the whole membrane
    > Moves molecules by facilitating diffusion
  • What is a career?
    > Moves molecules by active transport
  • What is Phospholipid?
The main barrier to large and charged molecule
  • What is Cholesterol?
Regulates fluidity of the membrane. More packing, less fluidity.
  • What is Glycoprotein?
Involved with cell signaling can act as a specific receptor to signaling molecules. Can act as antigens in cell recognition.
  • What is a Glycolipid?
Involved with cell recognition. They act as antigens.
