Physiological aids

    Cards (18)

    • What are the benefits of cooling aids?
      Reduce core body temperature
Decreased sweating and prevent hydration and early fatigue in hot env
Reduced thermal strain and cardiovascular drift
Treat injuries to reduce pain and selling and inflammation
Increases blood flow to aid repair and reduces DOMS (After)
    • What are the risks of cooling aids?
Hard to perceive exercise intensity so san lead to over-exertion
      Can mask or complicate injuries
Can cause ice burn or nerve and tissue damage
Can be dangerous for performers with heart conditions if used on chest area
    • What are the benefits of blood doping?
Increased red blood cell and haemoglobin count
      Increased oxygen transport
Increased intensity & duration of performance before fatigue
    • What are the risks of blood doping?
      Increased blood viscosity
      Decreased cardiac output
Increased rick of blood clots and heart failure
Risk of Infections or HIV from transfusions
    • What are the benefits of intermittent hypoxic training?
Increased red blood cell and haemoglobin count
      Increased oxygen transport
Increased intensity & duration of performance before fatigue
    • What are the risks of intermittent hypoxic training?
Decreased immune system so increased risk of infection
Benefits are lost quick after training ceases
      Dehydration
Lose motivation & disrupt training patterns
Hard to reach normal work rates under hypoxic conditions
    • When are cooling aids used?
      • In hot climates
      • Part of PRICE
      • During recovery
    • what cooling aids used pre-event?
      • Ice vests
      • Cold towel wraps
    • What cooling aids are used for an injury?
      • Ice pack
      • Ice spray
    • What cooling aids are used post-event?
      Ice baths
    • How do cooling aids help pre-event?
      • Reduces core body temperature
      • Reduces thermal strain and cardiovascular drift
      • Reduces overheating, sweating, dehydration
    • How do cooling aids help injuries?
      • Reduce pain and swelling as a part of PRICE
      • Nerve endings are numbed to reduce pain
      • Arteries vasoconstrict to reduce blood flow and minimise swelling
    • How do cooling aids help post event?
      • Speed up recovery and reduce DOMS
      • During ice baths blood vessels constrict then after they vasodilate flushing tissue with oxygen rich blood healing and repairing damages cells and removing lactic acid
    • What are physiological aids?
Are a group of ergogenic aids used to increase the rate of adaption by the body to increase performance
    • What is blood doping?
This is illegal and is when blood is removed from the athlete its stored then re-injected into the athlete 4 weeks later
    • What is intermittent hypoxic training?
This is legal and is when intervals of breathing air low in oxygen and normal air. Using a mask to deliver hypoxic air, work interval lasts several minutes and sessions last from 15 to 90 mins. Training can last from 4-8 weeks
    • What sports is blood doping used in?
Used for aerobic athletes in endurance events such as marathon running, triathletes or Tour de France cycling
    • What sports is intermittent hypoxic training used in?
For aerobic athletes endurance events such as marathon runners, triathletes, Tour de France cyclists
