First stanza - Flashback, nostalgia. Shows the futility of dreams which are shattered by the realities of war.
"Down with the loud banditti people, Who robbed the orchards, climbed the steeple" - Memories of youth demonstrating how precious childhood is in an exploitative war setting.
"And now i'm drinking wine in France, the helpless child of circumstance" - Still a young child who has been aged significantly by war. War is unsuspecting and takes whoever it can get.
Heroism is the real fame
