chromatography

Cards (11)

  • what is chromatography?
a physical process that does not involve a chemical reaction in which no new substances are made.
  • what does chromatography allow us to do?

separate substances based on their different solubilites.
  • what is the first step of the process?
drawing a baseline in pencil 1cm up from edge.
  • what is the step after drawing the baseline?

put a dot of a colour then put a dot of a different colour next it - then place paper into a solvent
  • what is the step after marking the paper with ink?
solvent makes it's way up the paper - dissolving the ink in the two coloured dots; meaning that the ink is now carried up the paper and dissolved in the solvent
  • what is the stationary phase?

    the chromatography paper
  • what is the mobile phase?

    the solvent
  • what does it mean if there is just one colour after the solvent moves?

    the substance was pure.
  • what does it mean if there is two colours after the solvent moves?

that the colour was a mixture of those two colours
  • what is a more soluble substance more attracted to?

the mobile phase (solvent), than a less soluble substance
  • a more soluble substance travels further than a less soluble substance.
