• How it works

  Large boulders are piled up at the top of beach
• Advantages

  • Absorb the waves energy- reducing the power of the wave in order to reduce rate of erosion
  • Allows the beach to build up- which can act as a natural defence to the coast
  • Can be quickly put in place and are relatively cheap and easy to maintain
• Disadvantages

  • The cost to find the right boulders and to transport them to the beach can be high
  • They can reduce access to the beach
  • They do not fit in with the local geology
  • They are not effective in storm conditions
