    • Cardiac muscle is striated. Cardiac muscle cells have a single central nucleus, numerous mitochondria, and large amounts of stored glycogen; intercalated discs form junctions between adjacent cardiac muscle cells.
  • Cardiac muscle cells differ from skeletal muscle fibers
    • Cardiac muscle cells are almost totally dependent on aerobic respiration so includes lots of glycogen and lipid
    • T tubules of cardiac muscle cells are shorter than skeletal muscle cells
    • Cardiac muscle has larger number of blood vessels
    • Cardiac muscle cells contract without NS stimulation
    • Cardiac muscle cells interconnected by specialized cell junctions called intercalated discs
