  • Sir Thomas More:
Who?- Henrys ex chancellor, lawyer, speaker at the house of commons
Why did he oppose reformation?- Very loyal to CoA and refused to sign a letter asking the pope to annul Henrys marriage to her
Threat to Henry as he didn't support him. He didn't criticise Henry, just stayed quiet.
    Significance:
Very significant as he was very close to Henry, yet he still opposed his views on the reform of the church. Couldn't afford to let him live as this would've encouraged others to oppose the king. His execution sent out a clear message to warn others
  • Bishop John Fisher:
Who? A highly respected bishop who was very closely connected to the tudors but also a catholic.
Why did he oppose reformation? He supported CoA and the pope and spoke out against Henrys divorce, refused to swear 2 oaths (Supremacy and Succession). Pope pushed Henry to execute him when he made fisher a cardinal. Fisher secretly contacted Charles v asking him to invade England.
Significance: Very sig as he was close to Henrys family and H was reluctant to execute him at first, even though he committed treason: showing that H had a 'soft side' for him
