Free will vs Determinism

Cards (6)

  • What is the behaviourist approach?
Environmentally determinist - behaviour is controlled by environmental factors such as stimulus-response conditioning (operant + classical) over which we have no control
  • What is SLT?
Determinist (soft) - behaviour is controlled by environmental forces such as modelling and imitation.
  • What is the cognitive approach?
Determinist (soft) - cognitive system can only operate within the limits that we know but we are free to think before responding to a stimulus
  • What is the biological approach?
Biologically determinist - human behaviour governed by internal biological features e.g genetics which we have no control over
  • What is the psychodynamic approach?
Psychic determinist - unconscious forces drive our behaviour and stem from early, traumatic childhood experiences which we have no control over.
  • What is the humanistic approach?
Free will - humans are self-determining but we are affected by external/internal influences but we are active agents who determine our own development.
