Specialised cells

Cards (4)

  • What is the difference between growth and development?
    • Growths is the process of getting bigger, this happens by cells dividing. Examples: Weight , Height , Appereance
    • Development is how we change over time , it allows organs to function and occurs naturally.
  • Differentation : is the conversion of an unspecialised cell into a specialised cell
    • Cells = Smallest functional unit in an organism , are the building blocks of life. Examples : Red blood cells, heart cell.
    • Tissues = A collection of specialised cells that carry out a particular function together. Examples : Nervous tissues , muscle.
    • Organ = A collection of tissues that carry out a particular function together. Examples : Liver , Lungs.
    • Organ System = group of organs working together to perform a particular function. Examples : Respiratory system , Digestive system.
  • Red blood cell
    • Are found in blood
    • Function is to transport oxygen around the body
    • Adaptation = 1. Biconcave disc - they speed up the diffusion of oxygen into the cell and carbon dioxide out of the cell.
    • 2. Lots of haemoglobin - binds to oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin
    • 3. No nucleus - more space to contain haemoglobin molecules
    • 4. Flexible and small - to pass through narrow capillaries
