PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE IN ISLAM

    • Marriage creates a secure environment for having children (procreation)
    • Cohabitation is not allowed as it often involves sex outside of marriage which is a sin
    • Marriage completes half of your deen and is the sunnah of the prophet
    • Marriage brings 2 people/ families together in companionship and support for one another
    • Nikkah is the word Muslims use for marriage
    • Polygamy - a man is allowed to marry 4 women
    • Arranged marriage - 2 families of the bride and groom find suitable partners for their children, this is allowed in islam
    • Forced marriage - A marriage in which one or both individuals are forced to marry, this is strictly forbidden in Islam
    • Mahr - a gift that a groom promises to the bride as a symbol of commitment, respect and responsibility towards her
    • It can be anything with value eg money, jewelry, property etc
    • Walima - a feast held after the Nikkah to welcome the bride into the family, its a gathering of friends and family to mark the marriage
