  • Duty to war:

Regeneration: G - Pessimistic view of war. We are all caught up and there's nothing we can do.The way I see it, when you put the uniform on, in effect you sign a contract. And you don't back out of a contract merely because you've changed your mind.'

Wipers Times: F.R - War is a "Duty to the lads" emblematic of the commitment and camaraderie among soldiers facing the grim realities of trench warfare. Wipers Times will prove to be their form of contract that includes all the mens cooperation for an enjoyable experience amidst the hellish circumstances
  • Duty to War:

Both Barker and Hislop and Newman use mediums of literature to express viewpoints on Duty

Regeneration: Declaration of Sassoon: "I can no longer be a party to prolonging those sufferings for ends which I believe to be evil and unjust"

WP: Wipers Times for Roberts and Pearson: they construct satirical skits that have underlying meaning on Duty of war. Eg, Tip me up Duck board so "Senior Officer flies off camera with silly swannee-whistle sound effect" Conduct is wrong. Skit suggests fight back/resent.
  • Duty to War:
Both Sassoon and Roberts are eager to return to the front and reject therapy/hospital care.
Regeneration: "You're trying to stop me from going back" - Chapter 17 Sassoon to Rivers. Wrestles with the internal conflict of guilt versus political motives he opposed. Wants to return to his men and revoke the camararderie he once felt on the front.
Wipers Times: Roberts stage directions "Roberts coughs and retches" .. "Quacks say they'll have me right as rain and back on the front in no time" idiom portrays Roberts as so overtly jovial and optimistic
  • Reality of war:
Regen: "What am i supposed to do with this gob-stopper?" + 'It felt... sexy" - Prior repeatedly attempts to undermine war, but it comes back to bite him. The flashback from prior to the heat of battle results in his selective mutism to develop. War as haunting. Proceeds to break down after this and headbutt Rivers.
Wipers: 'The only good hun is a dead hun' --> 'her exit she made with aplomb!.. *The men laugh and cheer*' - Amidst the most tense part of the first act, the lads remain in laughter. Contrasting experience from prior
  • Camrarderie of war:
Regen: Sassoon is immeadiately rather nervous about the ambiguiety of how his fate will proceed after the declaration. Graves is there to console him and give advice. "For what it's worth, i agree with every word of it. But you've had your say. There's no point making a martyr of yourself"
WP: Henderson asks Roberts if Dodd is going over the top. "Even Dodd sir?
Roberts - "(patting Dodd on the shoulder)Especially Dodd! So here's to all you lads! The game has started!"
  • Duty towards war: Rivers to Prior after the relapse
"You did your duty. You've nothing to reproach with. You even cleaned the trenches"
  • Attitudes to war:
Regen: "They really do believe the whole thing's going to end in one big gloruis cavalry charge "Stormed at ith shot and shell, boldly they rode and well Into the jaws of death into the mouth of hell.." and all that rubbish"
WP: "The military mind doesn't change much does it?"
Howfield fails to identity the jokes: "Are we being offensive enough, Pearson?" "(Biting their lips to repress laughter)"
    Both portray authority as foolish
  • Attitudes to authority:
Rivers is respected - Prior "I find myself wanting to impress you"
Sassoon and Rivers dine together Chapter 10. His equal.
Although Sassoon gets overly frustrated at members inside.
    Roberts: Respected by all.
