Transmission Electron Microscope

    Cards (4)

    • How does it work?
Shorter wavelength as electrons are used, electrons passed through specimen. Black and white image created based on electrons absorbed. Focused using electromagnets as electrons have negative charge.
    • Advantages
Much higher resolution as it uses electron beam with short wavelength. (1nm)
      Detailed images of interior structures
      High magnification (500 000x)
    • Disadvantages
No true colour (false colour, black and white)
      Expensive
      Requires extensive training to operate
No living samples as it needs to be in a vacuum and sometimes use harsh chemical stains
    • TEM Image
