Protection from psychological & physical harm

Cards (4)

  • researcher should protect participants from harm during study. harm includes physical harm, embarrassment, humiliation, emotional distress and mental harm. the risk of harm should be no greater than the standard amount of risk a person may face in everyday life
  • Issue for researcher
some studies may involve degree of distress to participants, sometimes difficult to predict the degree of stress that will be experienced by participants and therefore not always a guarantee from harm
  • Overcome the issue
if participant begins to feel uncomfortable or distressed, should have been informed of their right to withdraw. this is particularly important if a participant has been deceived about the aims/procedures. even if participant fully informed of the study and what they'll take part in, still able to withdraw. in addition debriefing and counselling provided
  • also protect participant from findings of the study if they are likely to cause distress (achieved by offering them counselling) participants should leave the study in the same state they arrived
