key example of this is the battle of the Somme
24th Jun 1916 over 2 mil shells fired at German trenches. Soldiers sent over the top however Germans were still alive. 20000 died on the first day. however General Haig did not stop sending men over the top which resulted in 600000 British casualties for only 6 miles gained. Haig gained the reputation of butcher of the Somme stalemate continued.
