Globalisation is the idea that barriers between societies are disappearing and people are becoming more interconnected across national boundaries.
It resulted from growth of communication systems and global media.
It has changed international migration by increasing it
Acceleration
There has been a speeding up of the rate of migration. UN between 2000 and 2013 international migration increased by up to 33%. At the same time 862,000 people either left or entered the UK
Differentiation
Different types of migrant: permanent settlers, temporary workers, spouses and forced migrants such as asylum seekers or refugees. Students are now a major group of immigrants e.g. over 140,000 Chinese-born students are studying in UK universities.
Vertovec 2007
Globalisation has led to 'super diversity'. This means that migrants now come from a much wider range of countries.
Cohen 2006
He distinguishes between 3 different types of migrant:
Citizens - with full citizenship rights
Denizens - privileged foreign nationals
Helots - (slaves) are the most exploited group. They are a reserve army of cheap labour and regarded as 'disposable units of labour power'
