  • Globalisation
    • Globalisation is the idea that barriers between societies are disappearing and people are becoming more interconnected across national boundaries.
    • It resulted from growth of communication systems and global media.
    • It has changed international migration by increasing it
  • Acceleration
    There has been a speeding up of the rate of migration. UN between 2000 and 2013 international migration increased by up to 33%. At the same time 862,000 people either left or entered the UK
  • Differentiation
    Different types of migrant: permanent settlers, temporary workers, spouses and forced migrants such as asylum seekers or refugees. Students are now a major group of immigrants e.g. over 140,000 Chinese-born students are studying in UK universities.
  • Vertovec 2007
    Globalisation has led to 'super diversity'. This means that migrants now come from a much wider range of countries.
  • Cohen 2006
    He distinguishes between 3 different types of migrant:
    • Citizens - with full citizenship rights
    • Denizens - privileged foreign nationals
    • Helots - (slaves) are the most exploited group. They are a reserve army of cheap labour and regarded as 'disposable units of labour power'
