P1.8 Pressure & Volume constant

Cards (3)

  • What is the formula that links the pressure and volume of a gas (assuming temperature is kept constant)
    Pressure (p) x volume (V) = constant (k)
  • How does volume affects pressure in a gas?
    1. Decreasing the volume of the container, whilst keeping the number of gas particles the same, will increase the concentration.
    2. In this smaller volume, collisions between particles of gas and the walls of the container will be more frequent.
    3. A greater number of collisions per unit area of wall means the pressure increases.
  • Pressure increases with temperature. As you heat up the particles, they gain more kinetic energy, so more frequent collisions, resulting in more force against the container ➡️ more pressure.
