  • Where is Torr Quarry?

The Mendip Hills, Somerset, Western England
  • What is their main industry?

They quarry for limestone which is mostly used for building aggregate
  • They are economically sustainable because:

they employ 100 local people and contribute £15 million/year to the local economy through this employment and through contracting other local businesses
  • They have tried to be as socially and environmentally sustainable as possible by working on noise pollution:

They have strict rules around noise pollution and monitor this closely, not using heavy machinery at night time etc. to avoid any 'NIMBY' conflict from locals
  • They have tried to be as environmentally sustainable as possible in transport because:

75% of their rock is transported by train. This means fewer lorries on the narrow roads and therefore less traffic and noise. It also reduces the impact of the quarry on air pollution and climate change.
  • They are also being environmentally sustainable as they are restoring old quarries once they are finished with them. For example

200 acres of the site has been landscaped and is being restored to create wildlife lakes etc. which is restoring the biodiversity to the area once more.
