The NXT Controller or NXT Brick is the brain of a Mindstorms robot.
The NXT Brick is powered by 6 AA/LR6 batteries to function properly.
Using Alkaline batteries for the NXT Controller is recommended.
Output Ports - This is where you connect the motors.
The speed and direction of the rotation of the motor are selected during programming.
Maximum of three 3 motors can be connected to the NXT Controller through the output ports.
USB Port - This is where you connect the other end of the USB data cable to synchronize or program the NXT Controller through a computer.
Bluetooth Indicator - This shows the current status of any wireless Bluetooth connection.
If the Bluetooth icon is not shown, then the Bluetooth is off.
NXT Name - This identifies the NXT Controller when it is connected to the computer using wireless Bluetooth or USB connection.
NXT Names can be at most 8 characters long.
Battery Indicator - This displays the power level of the NXT Controller.
3 (number) bars mean that it is still full.
When the battery power is low, the battery icon will blink and show no bars at all.
Menu Icons - These icons show the different menus in the NXT Controller.
You can navigate through the menus using the scroll keys.
Enter Key - Though mostly used to select menus, subfolders, and functions.
Enter Key - It is also referred to as the Power ON key.
Input Ports - This is where you connect the sensors using data wires. During programming, select the appropriate type of sensor connected to the specific port number.
Maximum of 4 (number) sensors can be connected to the NXT Controller through the input ports.

My Files is a menu where you can see all the stored program you have made on the NXT Controller or downloaded from the computer.

Datalog Files
Software Files - All the programs you have downloaded from the computer go to the Software Files.
Datalog Files - NXT Controller includes a Datalog menu where all the recorded data is stored.
NXT Files - These are programs created on the NXT Controller.
The Sound Files section allows the user to test and listen to the builtin sounds.
View menu allows you to perform data logging, which is testing your motors and sensors, and seeing the recorded information on the display
Settings menu allows the user to change and modify various settings of NXT such as volume, sleep mode, firmware version, and deleting of files.

Delete Files
Volume - Changes the NXT Controller volume from 0 to 4, with 4 being the loudest and 0 making it silent.
There is also a “Never” setting, which allows the NXT Controller to stay awake until you turn it off.
Sleep Mode - Used to maximize the usage of battery. You can set the turn off timer to 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes, which will turn off the NXT Controller once it remains unused within the set time
NXT Version - This allows you to view the System Preferences such as firmware version and AVR.
Delete Files - This allows you to remove the programs installed on or uploaded to your NXT Controller.
