  • why do beaches form?
when constructive waves deposit sediment on the shore
  • how is the sediment on beaches sorted?
larger and more angular sediment is at the top of the beach and smaller, more rounded sediment is closer to the short, this is because the backwash only has enough energy to remove the smallest material, leaving the larger material at the top
  • what are berms, and when are they more likely to be seen?
ridges of sand and pebble (temporary landform) --> they occur at the high tide mark
    • more likely to be seen in the summer as the winter experiences stormier conditions which erodes the berms
  • what are drift-aligned beaches?
form when waves approach at a significant angle so longshore drift causes sediment to travel far up the beach
  • what are swash-aligned beaches?
formed when waves approach parallel to the shore so there's limited longshore drift and sediment doesn't travel up the beach far
  • what are spits and how do they form?

    • form when the coast suddenly changes direction e.g. across river mouths
    • longshore drift
