Formation of Placenta

• Placentation - term used to refer to the formation of the placenta
• Placenta - a pancake-shaped temporary organ that originates from both embryonic and maternal tissues
• Lacunae - are intervillous spaces
• Decidua Basalis - the part of the endometrium that lies beneath the embryo
• Decidua Capsularis - surrounds the uterine cavity face of the implanted embryo
• Decidua Capsularis - expands to accommodate the fetus, which eventually fills and stretches the uterine cavity
