Situation ethics

• what is situation ethics approach to homosexuality?

  Situation ethics focuses on the particular situation, the interests of the individual person and love and justice and might therefore, permit the breaking of traditional moral rules around sex in day-to-day situations. It would seek a pragmatic approach to homosexual sex, setting aside fixed moral truths in order to put the person and their relationship at the heart of each decision.
• Situation ethics would focus on the injustices in the way sexual relationships are regulated: the fact that heterosexual married couples are often viewed as the only form that a legitimate relationship can take would be viewed as unjust. If a same-sex couple can only find a meaningful relationship with one another than that would be the end that justifies breaking rules on who can have sexual relationships.
• what is a strength?

  Homosexual sex and marriage is no longer illegal and many people, including some Christians believe this is a good thing. They would point to passages in the Bible about being made in “God’s image” to show that everyone is equal and this should extend to relationships.
• what is a weakness?

  Many Christians believe there are absolute rules about having gay sex. They point to controversial passages in the Bible such as “do not lie with a man as you would with a woman…this is abominable.”
