  • Literature is a written works, especially those considered
    of superior or lasting artistic merit.
  • Literature derived the Latin littera, “a letter of the alphabet,” literature is first and foremost humankind’s entire body of
    writing
  • Literature functions more broadly in society as a means of both criticizing and affirming cultural values.
  • Two classifications of literature: Utilitarian and Creative
  • Utilitarian came from the word "utility".
  • Utilitarian means anything that has letters that are for practical or daily life use
  • Creative Literature appeals to the aesthetics as shown in
    the styles of writing by authors,poets, novelists, and playwrights
  • Prose is a creative literature without much regard to metrical structure. It can be spoken or written.
  • Two types of prose: Fiction and Non-Fiction
  • Fiction is a non-metrical text with plot, settings, characters,and themes. It could be either written prose (short stories, novels, and novelettes) or oral tradition (fables, fairytales, myths, legends, and folktale)
  • Non-fiction is a factual narration that focuses on actual events, places, and people. Examples are biographies, essays, journals, and epistles
  • Poetry utilizes words in a unique and special ways. It uses figurative language,imagery, rhyme, and other stylistic devices in its formation of verses and lines
  • Two types of poetry: Lyric and Narrative
  • Lyric Poems expresses observation, emotions and feelings in metered verse structure.
  • Narrative Poems, also known as story poems, narrates plot in a metrical form and the elements of a story are present in them.
  • Drama are performance and sub-branch of literature. It is the portrayal of events (fictional or not) with the delivery of written dialogue in either prose poetry structure. It can be performed on stage, in television, film or even the radio.
  • 2 major genres: Comedy and Tragedy
  • Other genres of drama: Dramatic Monologue, Tragicomedies, Melodrama, and Satires
