sampling

Cards (12)

  • What is event sampling?
Event sampling is a research method where specific events or behaviors are observed and recorded
  • advantage of random sampling- reduces risk of researcher bias in participant selection
  • limitation of opportunity sampling- leads to biased samples that may not represent the target population
  • a strength of stratified sampling is that it ensures every subgroup of the population is represented proportionally
  • What is stratified sampling?
target population is divided into subgroups to represent a key group, participants from each key group (strata) are randomly selected
  • What is opportunity sampling ?

selecting the most convenient participants from a target population
  • What is random sampling?

selecting participants at random from a target population, such as using a random number generator
  • What is systematic sampling ?

a predetermined system used to select participants from the target population, e.g- every 3rd person from the population is chosen
  • What is volunteer sampling?

participants self select to take part in a study, usually from seeing an advert or poster
  • Behavioural categories is when a target behaviour is broken down into observable, measurable components (operationalised)
  • Event sampling- the established target behaviour is recorded every time it occurs
  • Time sampling- A target individual or group is established, the researcher recorded their behaviour at a fixed time frame such as every 60 secs
