Holism vs Reductionism

Cards (5)

  • What is holism vs reductionism?
Holism is the belief that human behaviour should be viewed as integrated and not as separate parts. Reductionism is the belief that human behaviour can be explained by breaking it down into simpler component parts.
  • What are levels of explanation?

The idea that the same behaviour can be explained in several ways.
  • What is biological reductionism?

Biological reductionism is the belief that all complex behaviour can be explained solely in terms of their underlying biological processes.
  • What is environmental reductionism?

Environmental reductionism seeks to explain complex behaviour by reducing them to simpler, individual factors such as stimulus-response associations.
  • Attachment holism vs reductionism:
    • Developmental psychology tends to be holistic. May focus on one area but tend to recognise that each area of development is linked to each other area. E.g. maternal deprivation hypothesis had negative applications across different areas of development
    • Reductionist = Bowlby's 44 juvenile thieves study. Disruption to attachment said to be cause of later development of affectionless psychopathy. However, other factors like poverty in the home could have also contributed to it.
