  • It has only recently started to industrialise
    • HICs such as the USA and the UK industrialised over 200 years ago. They had lots of time to generate wealth and develop.
    • Factories manufacture so loads of low income jobs and so slow economic development
  • They were a colony
    • Many LICs were colonised by powerful trading nations e.g. France, UK
    • Much of Africa, South America and Asia were exploited for their resources and their people
    • Global development became uneven during this time
    • despite many countries becoming independent in the 20th century, they have been affected by power struggles and civil wars, as a legacy of hundreds of years of exploitation, with many facing challenges in terms of development
  • Conflict- wars reduce levels of development as men are often fighting instead of working 

    • money is used buying weapons rather than improving the country's roads, schools, hospitals etc. Schools and hospitals damaged meant economically active population decrease
    • There is damage to infrastructure: buildings and roads
