Thematic analysis

Cards (5)

  • It is a more general way of analysing data and it keeps the data qualitative
  • Thematic analysis involves identifying implicit or explicit themes within the data
The themes are seen as more broader compared to content analysis
  • Steps:
    1. Research will read through material
    2. Later analysis will involve a written discussion of the themes that emerged and what this may suggest
  • Evaluation for both content and thematic (strength)
    • Can be used when it may otherwise be too costly
    • As the method does not directly involve people, researcher cannot influence behaviour
  • Evaluation of content and thematic (weaknesses)
    • There may be lack of objectivity since researchers have to make decisions about what behaviour to look for
    • It is a description of behavior rather than an explanation
