    • Parts of the country are heavily reliant on traditional industries such as shipbuilding, coal, steel or textile production fared less well than those with a larger service sector or where newer industries took off
    • Clydeside, Northumberland, Durham, Lancashire and South Wales = traditional industry
    • London and the West Midlands did much better even in the 'hungry' 1930s
