  • Tulving (1972) was the first to distinguish between the different types of long term memories. He argued that episodic memory is our ability to recall memories of specific 'episodes' or events in our life. These might be big events such as getting married or graduating from university. They might also be less significant events such as what you had for breakfast or what you did last weekend. Not only do we remember what happened during these events in terms of specific people involved, where they happened (who, what where, how' etc), we also remember when they happened in time.
  • Tulving believed that episodic memories are not as well organised as semantic memories and noted that they are more likely to be forgotten. These memories can be easily expressed verbally (declarative).
