Upper Silesia

Cards (4)

  • This dispute occurred in 1921, due to the redrawing of Europe's international borders after World War 1.
  • Upper Silesia was rich in coal and industrial resources, and it had been a part of Germany. What happened to it was to be determined by a plebiscite (a direct vote) - Example of L of N principle of self determination.
  • The results of the vote saw 54% in favour of Germany's ownership, however this was invalid as Polish claimed to have been forced to vote Germany.
  • The League decided to split Upper Silesia with 2/3 of the territory going to Germany. Although less went to Poland, the third they received contained more economic resources. This proposal was accepted by both sides, and was another overall success for the L of N.
