• oxytocin is often called the 'love hormone' as it promotes feelings of bonding in both men and women
• oxytocin is released during amorous activities such as kissing and sexual intercourse
• oxytocin is also associated with the bonding process between and infant, with oxytocin levels being high directly after giving birth and during breast-feeding
• FELDMAN et al measured plasma levels of oxytocin in 62 pregnant women at 3 points; during 1st trimester, 3rd trimester and 1st month postpartum

  • they found that women with higher levels of oxytocin in the first trimester bonded better with their babies
  • those with higher oxytocin levels through the entire pregnancy and 1st month postpartum reported more behaviours that supported the formation of an exclusive relationship with their babies (singing songs or bathing/ feeding in specific ways)
