Chemical Bonding

Cards (7)

  • Bond Types:
    • Covalent
    • Ionic
    • Metallic
  • Covalent Bonding: 2 nonmetal atoms share electrons to form a bond.
  • Ionic Bonding: bond formed by the transfer of electrons. (Mostly Metal & Nonmetal)
  • Metallic Bonding: the attraction of valence electrons for the positive nucleus of metallic atoms, gives metals their properties, based on the sea of mobile electrons
  • Covalent Bonding Properties:
    • low melting points
    • likely to be gas or liquid
    • doesn't easily dissolve in water
    • cannot conduct electricity
  • Molecular Compound: a substance with covalent bonds. (Similar properties to covalent bonds)
  • Ionic Compounds:
    • forms a lattice crystal structure that's strong.
    • can dissolve in water
    • high melting point
    • conducts electricity when molten
