  • Failure to function adequately - behaviour that prevents coping with everyday life
    • a person becomes abnormal when they can no longer cope with the demands of everyday life (e.g. basic hygiene and nutrition)
  • (FtF) + Patient's perspective
    • acknowledges the patient's experiences and captures that of many people who need help (is an effective way of establishing negate abnormality)
  • (FtF) - Is it just deviation from the norm
    • hard to say if something is a failure or just deviation and treating deviation as a failure risks discrimination

    • the assessment is based on an opinion which can differ between experts
