• Hardwick Hall is built alongside Hardwick Old Hall, a medieval manor house owned by Bess's father, John Hardwick
• Bess also renovated Hardwick Old Hall alongside Hardwick Hall
• Bess used the local estates to benefit her; for example animals farmed on her land were used in the kitchen, and wool was used or sold; mined stone and slate was used to build Hardwick Hall; factories for glass and brickmaking produced materials used for building and sold to neighbouring estates; rented and leased land to create profit for herself, and used wood from local forests to build Hardwick Hall
