• During the Elizabethan period, staircases became a feature in stately homes, made of timber or stone framework, allowing for elaborate decoration
• The staircase provided an elaborate walkway from the entrance hall to the great chamber
• Servants couldn't use the grand staircases unless instructed too; they had hidden back staircases, and even the family couldn't use the main stairs if there was royalty
