Marble and woodwork

• Thomas Accres created the marble work at Hardwick Hall
• The fireplaces were mostly made of marble
• Marble fireplaces offered more heat and comfort, and fitted with the Renaissance style, due to the symmetry
• The woodwork was based on Flemish designs
• Bess preferred to decorate her walls with tapestries rather than wood panneling
• The increase in elaborate woodwork and marblework shows the huge increase in wealth for the gentry
