  • Carbohydrates are categorised into three groups: Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, and Polysaccharides
  • Monosaccharides like glucose and fructose consist of one single sugar molecule that doesn't need an enzyme to digest, and cannot be broken down any further
  • Disaccharides like lactose and sucrose consist of two monosaccharides joined together. They require a digestive enzyme to be absorbed
  • Carbohydrates contain Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen
