  • 1926 - convention on slavery established along with servitude, forced labour, and similar institutes.
    'Defined' slavery + identified other, non traditional ways of trading slaves.
    1. Enslavement as payment for debt
    2. Adopting childfen who were, in fact, being enslaved
    3. Selling a child and calling the payment a dowry
  • The league proposed the best way to deal with slavery, was to outlaw it in every country. It made other proposals including:
    1. The transport of slaves at sea to be considered an act of piracy.
    2. European and egyptian ships were allowed to pursue slave ships into countries' own territorial waters.
  • In 1930 the ILO defined forced labour as
    'All work which is extracted from any person under the menace of property' (as oppose to work being voluntary)
  • By 1929, 30 governments had ratified the convention.
    It made positive progress dealing with slavery, encouraging its end in Nepal (1926), Burma (1928) and Jordan and Persia (1929).
    It also found a significant amount of slavery in Liberia which led to reforms abolishing slavery there too.
  • In 1931, the league reported slavery was continuing in some lands bordering the red sea.
    Slaves were being transported from Abyssinia and the somali coast.
    Necessary reforms were requested by Liberia to abolish slavery.
  • Although slavery was not ended, the L of N took important steps in making it unacceptable around the world.
    League's mandate commission also worked against slavery.
