In 1700s
Carl Linnaeus
created a
classification system
which grouped
organisms
based on their
characteristics
and
bone structure
.
Linnean system;
Kingdom
(
plants
,
animals
,
fungi,
protists
,
bacteria
)
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
An organism is named after their
genus
and
species
and is in
latin.
It is also often written in italics or underlined.
In 1990s Carl
Woese
proposed the three
domain
system
(it was merged with the Linnean system). The three domains are;
eukaryota
,
bacteria
and
archea
.
Evolutionary trees are used to show how
closely
related
organisms
are. They are completed using
classification
data and
fossils.
